Designing memory that stays useful

Memory should help the next decision. Useful memory is selected, attributable, scoped, and maintained.

01

Separate different kinds of state

Working state describes the current task. Durable knowledge may be reused across tasks. Keeping these separate prevents a temporary assumption from becoming a lasting fact.

02

Retain provenance

Keep the source and relevant date with a remembered fact. A system can then revisit evidence when requirements change or two sources disagree.

A harness makes context, tools, execution, and review part of one observable system.

03

Define expiration and correction

Some knowledge becomes stale quickly. Establish refresh policies, remove superseded values, and preserve the context of corrections where it matters.

04

Test usefulness

Evaluate whether memory changes the answer in a useful way. Measure retrieval relevance and task quality rather than assuming that storing more information improves performance.
